Hiraeth – (n.) a homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home which maybe never was; the nostalgia, the yearning, the grief for the lost places of your past.
Through the exploration of this word above, Joel Porter's sophomore album 'Hiraeth EP' became a project that led him to places of homesickness tinged with grief. A project that is tied to the loss of his grandfathers. 'Hiraeth' carries themes of longing, yearning, nostalgia, wistfulness, and an earnest desire for a life or place from the past. Certain periods of life carry an awareness… growth… a struggle in letting go of the good things that have come and gone. This album is an ode to the places we remember so vividly, but can no longer not touch… to family living and deceased, heritage, a home in North Dakota, the beauty found in open spaces, and the process of growing from a past that no longer exists.
